What is the cottage cheese substance that comes out of my daughter mouth while burping her?

I pump my breast milk and store them in the fridge. Prior to pouring some in a bottle I see the cottage cheese substance on the side of the fridge bottle, which will then get poured into the bottle I feed my daughter. Was is it? This cottage cheese substance thing? Please explain.

  1. She may have acid reflux, nothing to worry about. Get this book called What To Expect The First Year, lots of info. Hope this helps and good luck with the baby!
  2. Ew, that is curdled, sour milk. I never had that problem. Your milk is not staying cold or something is wrong. That shouldn't happen IN the bottle.
  3. totally normal! It's semi-digested milk...
  4. when you pump, then put it into the fridge, the milk will separate a bit. That is normal. Just shake and pour. It is fine. Happens to me all the time, I pump and feed only. Do not worry about it. Just enjoy your baby, and gratz on breast milk feeding. :)
  5. the stuff on the bottle is the fat in the milk, it separated when it sat in the fridge and you have to shake the bottle to re-mix it. The cheese she burps up is partially digested milk from her stomach. Both are normal things, so no worries.
  6. they are different substances. in the fridge it is the fat from your milk. when it is heated it liquifies again and gets shaken up into the fluid again. coming from your daughter is spit up. she is still too small to contain everything in her belly. you may be over feeding her but more likely is it just takes time and she is spitting up. nothing to worry about.
  7. milk, when broken down, becomes curds and whey. The whey is a yellowish liquid - the curds look like cottage cheese. It's the solidified protein. It can burp out of your daughter because her stomach has begun to break down the milk. If you are getting large globs in the bottle in the fridge, you might consider making sure all your pumping and bottle paraphinalia is clean - sounds like there might be some bacteria breaking down the milk.
  8. Make sure that you are thoroughly cleaning all containers you use and your pump. You might want to consider keeping the milk stored in the actual bottles you use to feed the baby. It's one less area to worry about. Everything else sounds pretty normal to me! You're doing a great job! Good luck! kjl
  9. spit up. she has reflux. as for the milk not coming OUt of her mouth: the fat in your milk gets cold and turns to solid just like fat in cows milk or meat products
  10. ok well here is my opinion. If she is spitting up the cottage cheese substance after eating and while being burped it is normal, It is being digested and she its full and spitting it up. If it is coming out of the fridge that way and is in the bottle that way before you feed it to her you milk is souring. Try putting it in the back of the fridge. DONT FEED HER MILK THAT LOOKS LIKE THAT. It could " poison" her and make her very sick. Try turning the coldness of the fridge up there should be a knob on the inside of the fridge for that. But if shes just burping it up its fine its normal but if its that way before you feed it to her its sour.My breast milk NEVER did that.
  11. milk from the tummy. She must have really needed to burp :)
